Top 10 Issues in Vancouver Centre
10. Guaranteed Livable Income
We can end systemic poverty by establishing a universal Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) program to replace the current array of income supports, such as disability payments, social assistance and income supplements for seniors.
9. Universal Pharmacare and Dental
We can modernize healthcare by expanding our single-payer Medicare model to include Pharmacare for everyone as well as free dental care for low-income Canadians
8. Double Canada Pension Plan
We can ensure the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) remains robust and adaptive to changing needs and circumstances by increasing over time the target income replacement rate from 25 percent to 50 percent of income received during working years.
7. Decriminalize Illicit Drugs
We can address the opioid crisis as a health-care issue, not a criminal issue. We can also decriminalize drug possession, ensuring people have access to a screened supply and the medical support they need to combat their addictions.
6. Safe and Affordable Housing
We can tackle housing affordability by legislating housing as a legally protected fundamental human right for all Canadians and permanent residents, and build 250,000 new purpose-built affordable rental units over the next 10 years.
5. Work in Indigenous Communities
We must respect Indigenous Sovereignty and self-determination by establishing processes for self-governing Indigenous Peoples and nations to transition out from under the Indian Act, grounding this in the doctrine of free, prior, and informed consent.
4. Proportional Representation
We can ensure that the 2019 election is the last “first past the post” election by launching a Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform with the mandate to make recommendations to parliament on an electoral system that would “make every vote count.”
3. Post-secondary Education Tuition-free
We can reinvest in education by making college and university tuition-free for all Canadian students, and by forgiving the federal portion of existing student debt.
2. Affordable Childcare
We can strengthen children’s health, development and well-being by creating a universal, affordable, early learning and child-care (ELCC) system.
We can cancel the Trans Mountain pipeline project and achieve 60 percent cut in climate-changing emissions below 2005 levels by 2030, reaching net zero in 2050 through new legislation, federal regulations, public spending, and pollution pricing.
